USING FLEA CONTROL PRODUCTS? READ THE LABEL FIRST!

Each year as flea season approaches, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) receives thousands of calls from pet owners who have accidentally misused flea control products on their cats. There are almost 20 brands of products containing permethrin currently available that are labeled “for dogs only.” Because when used on cats—even in small amounts—these products can spell big trouble.

“The misuse of flea and tick products can be extremely harmful and even deadly to our companion animals,” says Dr. Steven Hansen, APCC Senior Vice President. Signs commonly seen with permethrin toxicity in cats include tremors, muscle fasciculation and seizures. These symptoms can develop within hours, or may be delayed up to 48 hours. Most cats have a good chance of recovery with prompt and aggressive veterinary treatment, which may include medication, IV fluids, bathing and other supportive care.

APCC experts urge you to consult with your veterinarian before purchasing products to control fleas on your pet or in your home—and always read the product instructions completely before using any product on your pet. Adds Hansen, “By simply taking the time to read a product label carefully, a pet owner could save his or her animal’s life.”

If you have used a flea control product and notice that your cat is exhibiting any of the above symptoms, call your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center's emergency hotline at (888) 426-4435 for round-the-clock telephone assistance. For more pet poison prevention tips, please visit APCC online.

I hate this. I really do. It's scary that a government can pretty much tell you what kind of dog you can own or can't own. Thank God it's not in this country...but who's to say it won't happen? Read this to see what I'm talking about:

Dear Becky,

It has begun.

At 7:34 a.m., I watched the barbaric clubbing of one of the first baby seals killed on Canada's ice floes this season, signaling the start of the largest commercial slaughter of marine mammals on the planet.

It was not easy to watch. And it won't be easy to stop. It will require the unrelenting pressure of people like you and me who will not stand idly by while hunters methodically beat, skin, and kill these defenseless animals. But we can and will stop it--with your help. On this tragic day, I urge you to join me in stopping the seal hunt forever by making a donation to our Protect Seals campaign.

I'm in Canada leading a skilled and dedicated team of professionals from The Humane Society of the United States.

The seal hunt has begun.
Join us in stopping it.

We're here to document the awful abuses and violations of Canada's own regulations by those who hunt the seals. Shockingly, an independent team of veterinarians who studied the seal hunt concluded that up to 42% of the seal pups they studied were probably skinned while still alive and conscious. I can't even begin to describe to you the plight of these helpless seal pups as they are callously slaughtered right in front of each other.

This year, more than 300,000 seals will be killed because Canadian lobbying groups unjustifiably claim that seals hurt the country's commercial fisheries. Tragically, many of these beautiful animals will be as young as 12 days old when they are slaughtered. Your donation today will help us go head to head with the fishing industry and the Canadian government as we create a public outcry so loud--and an international boycott so effective--that Canada will no longer be able to ignore it.

Together, we will stop the seal hunt forever. Please, make your contribution today, and join me in making a personal commitment to this massive effort.

Thank you for all that you do on behalf of animals and for your support during this tragic time on the Canadian ice.

Sincerely,

Rebecca Aldworth

"The largest commercial slaughter of marine mammals on the planet will begin in late March. By the end of this year's hunt, more than 300,000 baby seals will have been brutally killed—many, incredibly, as young as 12 days old. The Humane Society of the United States will be on the front lines in Canada, reporting and videotaping events as they unfold and fighting to halt this atrocity. Stand with us today and stop the seal hunt forever."

Guest Action Alert: Morini beagle breeders

Morini Farm breeds beagles for vivisection in northern Italy. It currently has a vigourous campaign against it. Please support the campaign to close down Morini Farm and give support to dedicated activists by taking the time to read this action alert and email the politicians listed in it.

For more information on the campaign see
http://www.morinicampaign.tk

CHC.
==========================
On November 20th an International demo took place against Morini Farm with a gathering of more than 1500 protesters, all determined to close down this vile business forever. The march was brutally charged and attacked by hundreds of riot policemen, using the excuse of a few rocks thrown at them. By the end dozens of protesters were injured, some of them hospitalised with broken bones.

This was just one of the attempts to halt the campaign.

More news has arrived since:

**The farm had received the renewal of the license to sell beagles to labs a couple weeks before the demo, but this was initially kept secret. Now hundreds of puppies imprisoned inside the sheds can once more be sent to death in laboratories. This despite when the sale and use of dogs and cats for vivisection being banned in the whole Emilia Romagna region (where Morini is situated) two years ago.

**Some left wing politicians took the riot as an excuse to propose a ban on all demos at the farm and in the town of San Polo d’Enza. They changed their minds a couple weeks later after hundreds of e-mails and phone calls. These politicians had signed a proposal to convert Morini in anything else but vivisection breeder two years ago, and some parts of the left reminded them this. They decided in the end to propose again for the closure of the farm and said they’ll support a new law that is under scrutiny, which proposes just a ban on the sale (and not the use) of dogs and cats in the Emilia Romagna region.

**The police banned demos anyway, so activists cannot hold demos at the farm or in the town. Two activists with no banners or placards are not a demo, so protesters can still stay in front of the farm watching movements and keeping police and pressure there.

**The same politicians who brought in the law on the sale and use of cats and dogs in the region have now proposed a new one, which bans only the sale of these animals. Regulation on vivisection comes from the government in Rome, but regulation on breeders can be at the hands of regions. So this law, if passed, cannot be cancelled. It was due to be discussed on December 1st, but has been postponed.

**The attention on Morini has never been so hot as after the “riot demo”, and all political parts from local municipality to the City of Reggio Emilia, to the County Council and the Region said on newspapers they want to have a “round table conference” with the owner to find the way to convert Morini, thus solving all problems. We can add that the land where the farm lays now can be used to build houses on it, and already projects and offers have been made.

This is why while the Morini campaign continues with demos (or more appropriately with non-demos) and targeting suppliers and customers, we are asking you to contact all the following politicians from different local or regional institutions that can have a say in this case.

Tell them it is a shame that any demo at the farm and in the town of San Polo d’Enza has been banned, and that protesters have been so brutally charged and beaten by the police. Tell them you want protesters’ to have the right to demo and Morini farm closed down forever as the only real solution to this case.

A number of important bills to combat cruelty and improve the lives of animals were signed into law during state legislative sessions in 2004. Among the many victories, the force-feeding of ducks and geese in the production of foie gras was banned in California, and the penalty for animal fighting in Iowa was increased to a felony. Unfortunately, many anticruelty messages weren't heard, and several inhumane bills were passed—including the legalization of the hunting of mourning doves in Minnesota and Michigan.

ASPCA PLEDGES $25,000 TO AID ANIMALS AFFECTED BY TSUNAMI [13 Jan 2005|06:20pm]

mongrel
[ mood | content ]

The devastation wreaked by the tsunami in South Asia was not reserved for humans alone. Amazingly, many wild animals escaped the danger because they were able to sense the impending quake—but others were not so fortunate. Countless farm animals, dogs, cats and marine animals were lost, especially in India, Sri Lanka, and Indonesia, and many others have been left diseased and without food or water. Several international animal rescue organizations, including the UK-based World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA), have rallied to action, and the ASPCA has lent its support to these rescue efforts.

"I am pleased to announce that the ASPCA will be pledging $25,000 in support of WSPA's efforts," says Edwin J. Sayres, ASPCA president. "They are currently dispatching their disaster relief teams on the ground to the hardest hit regions, in order to provide food and veterinary supplies for starving and sick animals." Urgent assistance is already being provided through the distribution of food for starving animals in India, and food and veterinary supplies in Thailand. WSPA anticipates providing support shortly for relief efforts in Indonesia and Sri Lanka.

In addition to WSPA, the International Fund for Animal Welfare is also working directly with affected communities to provide veterinary services and reunite survivors with their lost pets. Both organizations are now accepting donations for their Disaster Relief Funds at their respective websites, WSPA-USA.org and IFAW online. Please stay tuned to ASPCA News Alert for more information on the rescue efforts.

From SHAC:

Welcome to 2005 and a whole new year in stopping animal abuse and those profiting from it. 2004 was a fantastic year of success, with the surpassing our target of 100 suppliers to drop Huntingdon Life Sciences. Indeed, by the end of the year they were falling over themselves to dump the notorious HLS. How sweet it was to hear a little bird tell us that certain top staff at HLS were tearing their hair out at our continued success and they felt humiliated having to beg companies to continue dealing with them.

This is why many of you received replies saying that companies were no longer doing business with HLS – it was just not possible to get the information out fast enough in these fantastic times! But don’t apologize to these firms – they have made enough profit from the suffering of animals, so they need to realise the strength of feeling against vivisection. It will make them think twice on going back on their word in future, or even in dealing with other animal laboratories.

We also proved that we were more than capable of dealing with what ever was thrown at us. HLS was making big promises to its clients that 2004 was the year the campaigns against them would be broken. Err… we think not! One only has to look at all the actions, demos and news being reported to see that this is a campaign as strong as ever, and raring to get their teeth stuck into the next set of targets.

There is a single, simple reason for all this. We care. We are not motivated by profit, but by the hideous suffering of all the animals inside HLS. Every animal seen in the videos from inside HLS is now dead. They spent their lives in inhumane conditions and they were tortured to death. How can we sit by idly when we know this? Feeling despair will not help the animals in barren cages awaiting their prolonged death at the hands of HLS “technicians”. Not when we have shown time and time again that we can take on some of the biggest companies in the world and stop them from profiting from HLS’s animal abuse.

What the animals need is action. And that includes action against the companies delivering the orders and chemicals which will spell out the death of those animals. Orders and chemicals often delivered by United Parcels Service (UPS). This is one of the worlds biggest courier firms and they have been spotted popping in and out of HLS on a near daily basis. How many animals have had to die to pay for their services?

UPS is big, but so are we. Already there has been a great global week of action against them, so it is time to send another message to the. Below are the contact details for UPS and their subsidiaries Menlo World Wide Forwarding and Mail Box Etc – so please do what you do so well, and send polite messages to UPS asking them to stop delivering to and accepting packages from Huntingdon Life Sciences. We will not stop targeting them until they do. 2005 is not going to be a year the animal abusers will savour…

GREYHOUNDS WIN IN THE NORTHWEST!

We are pleased to announce that the last stronghold of greyhound racing in the Pacific Northwest will be closing when its lease expires on December 31. Oregon's Multnomah Greyhound Park (MGP) has been struggling to survive for several years, but "competitive pressures" have forced its doors to close.

The adoption kennel of the Oregon Greyhound Association has pledged to find homes for all the remaining dogs at MGP, and will remain open until all the dogs are placed. If you would like to bring home one of these former racers, please call (503) 669-2129 today.

Just as Bad as Abuse. [22 Dec 2004|08:52am]

When we think of animal cruelty, the word "abuse" comes flying to our minds. In reality, animals are just as mistreated by neglect and exploitation.

Webster's defines neglect as:

1 : to give little attention or respect to : DISREGARD
2 : to leave undone or unattended to especially through carelessness

Not supplying an animal with the required amount of food, water, shelter, veterinary care and love for it to thrive under human care is neglect. Not intervening to help an animal who has come across a dangerous or unhealty situation is neglect. Not giving a flying fuck? You guessed it; neglect.

Webster's defines exploitation as:

1 : to make productive use of : UTILIZE
2 : to make use of meanly or unjustly for one's own advantage

Circuses and rodeos are some of the cruelest events around today. Not to mention bull-fighting, cock fighting and dog fighting. Using animal as a source of entertainment without putting the animal's health and welfare first is exploitation.

Degrees of Neglect [22 Dec 2004|08:50am]

mongrel
[ mood | awake ]

Just an FYI -- it takes only 10 minutes in a car for the internal temperature to rise 19 degrees. 19 degrees!

If you ever see a dog in a car on a hot day, go into the store it is closest to and have a cashier make an announcement over the PA that there is a dog in a car in the parking lot and unless it is taken home immediately, the police will be called.

If there is no response, go check on the dog and call the police or animal control (whoever will respond sooner). They will make sure the dog is safely removed and the owner notified and perhaps cited.

Use your judgement and go with your gut.

Woo Hoo! [07 Dec 2004|07:31pm]

I received this email today:

BOC HAVE PULLED
As we write 90 suppliers of Huntingdon Life Sciences have pulled their services from the company, many due in part to hearing the opinions of people acting on the information presented in our action alerts. However, the news that BOC are pulling their services has to be the pinnacle of the year! This is fantastic news, and yet again we say thank you to everyone who contributed to this great victory.

BOC Gases have been a supplier to HLS for many years, providing the gas used to kill the animals discarded at the end of an experiment, or even any healthy, untouched animals surplus to requirements. They are a company well and truly integrated with the animal abuse industry supplying many other companies as well, so we knew it was going to be a hard battle. But thanks to the amazing efforts of people determined to stop HLS’s barbaric animal experiments, it was won far sooner than expected.

This company took loosing their largest shareholder Abbey National, spent a small fortune on taking out an injunction and had to deal with the pressure being put on its single biggest customer Marks & Spencers. Even its second biggest shareholder Fidelity took out an injunction. But all to no avail. A protests around the world began to take off, and BOC were forced to realise that we truly are a global movement, they realised that there is no where to hide and our determination is boundless. They simply had to throw in the towel and concede victory to us. What a nice Xmas present!
